What Gift Should I Bring to a Jewish Wedding?

9th Sep 2015

If you've been invited to a Jewish wedding, you may not be sure what gift would be appropriate for the bride and groom. Many couples will create a Gift Registry to give their friends and loved ones a choice of Judaica gifts to buy them but if they don't, what are some good choices?

One gift option are wedding break glass kits. Jewish weddings almost always include a breaking of glass at the end of the ceremony. The glass-breaking is typically followed by a communal "Mazel tov!", which means "good fortune" in Yiddish and is the equivalent of "Congratulations!" If the couple hasn't already gotten this as a gift, giving it to them would be a wonderful thing to do.

Mezuzahs are also a wonderful gift choice for a Jewish wedding. The mezuzah is a small parchment inscribed with verses from the Bible. It is rolled and inserted in a mezuzah case and attached to the doorpost.

Giving the bride and groom a gift for an upcoming Jewish holiday is also very popular, whether it's for Passover, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah, or any other special occasion. Seder plates are a popular choice for Passover, Menorahs are a welcome Hanukkah gift, and for Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year), apple and honey plates will come in handy.

Lastly, if you don't want to give a gift specific to a holiday, a gift for the home is a good choice.

Whatever you decide, Mazel Tov to the new couple and enjoy the uniquely wonderful event that is a Jewish wedding.
